Surah Lahab

Surah Lahab is also known as Surah Al-Masad. The surah is named after the word Lahab which means Fire or flames or blazing fire. The surah mainly addresses the intense enmity and hostility of Abu Lahab,( Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) uncle) towards Islam and Prophet Muhammad himself.

Abu Lahab is a person who strongly opposes Islam and he plays an important role in the persecution of early Muslims in Mecca.

In Islamic History, surah lahab holds a prominent place. The surah was revealed in a very critical period when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was facing severe opposition and oppression from the Tribe Quraysh, Among tribes of Quraish Abu Lahab held a prominent position and he did not leave any point to discredit and harm Prophet Muhammad.

تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ ﴿1﴾ مَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُ مَالُهُ وَمَا كَسَبَ ﴿2﴾ سَيَصْلَىٰ نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ ﴿3﴾ وَامْرَأَتُهُ حَمَّالَةَ الْحَطَبِ ﴿4﴾ فِي جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌ مِنْ مَسَدٍ ﴿5﴾

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem

  1. Tabbat yadaa abee Lahabinw-wa tabb
  2. Maa aghnaa ‘anhu maaluhoo wa ma kasab
  3. Sa-yaslaa naaran zaata lahab
  4. Wamra-atuhoo hammaa latal-hatab
  5. Fee jeedihaa hablum mim-masad

Message Of Surah Al Lahab

Surah comprises five ayat, and its message is clear and forceful. The surah starts with a declaration of the perishing state of Abu Lahab and his wife, Umm Jamil, she is very active in opposing Islam’s message. These ayats state that their wealth and effort will not help them from impending punishment hereafter.

“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

  1. May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he.
  2. His wealth will not avail him or that which he gained.
  3. He will [enter to] burn in a Fire of [blazing] flame
  4. And his wife [as well] – the carrier of firewood.
  5. Around her neck is a rope of [twisted] fiber.”

These ayats are translated into English to understand, ayats as you see a stern warning or those who oppose the truth and engage themselves in bad activity and actions against Islam and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

The mention of “a Fire of [blazing] flame” signifies the severe punishment awaiting those who persist in disbelief and hostility.
